Named in MGM v. Grokster. Bankrupt 2008.
Morpheus, from StreamCast Networks, briefly held the crown as the most-downloaded file-sharing app on Download.com. It moved from FastTrack to Gnutella mid-flight when its license was revoked overnight — a near-death experience that defined its scrappy reputation.
The 2005 Supreme Court MGM v. Grokster decision named Morpheus directly. By 2008 the company was bankrupt, the network was gone, and the era was effectively over.
A reminder that on the early internet, your entire user base could vanish overnight if a license expired.
